What Is EV Recuperation?

Recuperation is the process of recovering energy during suitable deceleration and feeding that energy back into the battery. It is one of the defining characteristics of an electric drivetrain.

How recuperation works

When the vehicle slows under suitable conditions, the electric motor can operate as a generator rather than only as a drive motor. Instead of wasting all of the vehicle's kinetic energy as heat through the friction brakes, part of that energy can be converted back into electrical energy.

Why recuperation feels different between EVs

Manufacturers calibrate regenerative braking differently. Some vehicles provide strong lift-off deceleration, some allow selectable levels and others blend regenerative and friction braking more subtly. Battery state, temperature and vehicle software can also affect how much energy recovery is available at a particular moment.

STEINBAUER and recuperation

On selected compatible applications, STEINBAUER may offer increased recuperation either alongside a performance enhancement or as a recuperation-only option while retaining the standard power output. Availability and behaviour remain specific to the exact vehicle.
